Winter & Rain Boots

What are “vegan” winter and rain boots?

Vegan winter and rain boots are simply boots that are designed to withstand cold and wet weather, and are made from natural and synthetic materials and textiles (including the glues and dyes used in the boots) that are not derived from animals. They are also considered “cruelty-free” if none of the dyes, materials or adhesives are tested on animals.

What materials are used to make women’s winter and rain boots?

Vegan & cruelty-free snow, cold weather and rain boots can be made from any combination of natural and synthetic cruelty-free materials, textiles and fibres, including:

Why buy bad weather footwear that’s vegan?

Every conceivable style and colour of women’s cold, snow and wet weather footwear can be made without the use of leather, wool, suede, sheep skin and other animal materials and by-products. Vegan and cruelty-free boots can pull off the same, look, feel and function as their leather, wool and suede-based counterparts.

Does buying one pair of vegan boots really make a difference?

Yes, and it’s actually a very effective form of animal activism! Here’s how it works; by purchasing vegan winter or rain boots, or any other ‘vegan’ product, for that matter, you’re telling retailers, manufacturers and designers that there’s a market for animal-friendly footwear. Revenue coming in from these products will help support their product lines, so more of them can be made, and more marketing dollars can be put into getting the word out that they exist. This also works two ways; the more vegan boots leaving shelves, the more leather, sheep skin, wool and suede boots left sitting on shelves, and not getting re-ordered by retailers, or re-made by manufacturers. This sends the message to companies that the market for cruelty-derived products is shrinking. At the end of the day, demand fuels supply.

Are women’s vegan rain, snow and winter boots expensive?

Just like leather, wool and other animal material-based winter and rain boots, the cost to make vegan and cruelty-free models can vary quite a bit from one company, and one model to the next. Differences in materials used and production methods used result in a variety of retail prices. Some vegan boots are quite affordable, whereas others are quite expensive; most ladies’ bad weather vegan boots fall somewhere in between.

Should I get rid of non-vegan winter/rain boots that I already own?

This is a fairly controversial topic, and one that's very hotly debated. In our opinion, it’s up to you to decide what to do with your old non-vegan boots. Some people feel weird about wearing boots made from animal-derived materials after they turn vegan, to the point where they will donate them, give them to a friend or family member, or sell them. Others (for financial or other reasons) choose to wait until the boots are in a state of disrepair, or have generally outlived their usefulness, before they replace them with a vegan and animal-friendly pair; the choice depends on what you’re comfortable with, and possibly what you can afford.

What companies make vegan women’s bad weather boots?

There are basically 2 types of companies that make women’s cold and wet weather boots; companies that primarily make boots using animal derived materials and by-products, but choose to include vegan items to broaden their marketing reach, for cost reduction purposes, or for other reasons; then there are companies that exclusively make their boots vegan for ethical, sustainability, business or other possible reasons. Some companies whose women’s foul weather footwear is completely vegan-friendly include:

Non-vegan companies that make an extensive line of vegan boots include:

How do you choose which companies to list?

We keep a list of women’s footwear companies that we find by way of social media, word of mouth, by Google searches and by other methods, whose entire catalogue seems to be vegan. We contact these companies to check that they don’t use any animal-derived materials or by-products in the making of these products. If we’re convinced their items are suitable for vegans, and they’re listed on Amazon, then we display them here for your shopping convenience.

Do you list vegan boots from non-vegan companies?

Yes, but it depends on the item. If we have a hard time getting straight answers from non-vegan companies with regard to which of their products are suitable for vegans, we won’t list their products. We have to be 100% sure that everything we list on this site is vegan & cruelty-free.
