Founded in 2013 in Madrid, Spain, Muroexe is a unisex casual footwear brand that's available in over 300 retail locations. They plan to quickly introduce upcoming models that are made from recycled materials, and that are also recyclable, and are in negotiations with companies that can help them offset their carbon emissions through reforestation efforts.

"When we started the Muroexe project, one of our maxims was to break away from the traditional use of fur and leather, which was the most commonly used fabric in sports footwear and especially in shoes, and to replace it with innovative synthetic materials. What materials are used to make Muroexe shoes?

Muroexe uses a variety of materials to make their shoes and sandals. Depending on the model, they use some combination of: memory foam (insoles); injected rubber (soles); non-slip rubber (soles); mesh (uppers); waxed microfibre (uppers); polyester (unspecified); cotton (unspecified); elastic (straps). When we asked Muroexe about their glues, they said, "In addition, all the glues we use for the assembly of our trainers are totally vegetable."

Are Muroexe shoes eco-friendly/sustainable?

It's difficult to assess the eco-friendliness of Muroexe’s footwear, as we don't know the exact composition of their shoes, and cannot find any relevant data on their website. Generally speaking, however, vegan leathers (such as those that Muroexe might use in some models) are less harmful to the environment that animal-derived leathers - this is backed up by data from inside the fashion industry as well as outside. Does production of Muroexe shoes create a lot of CO2 emissions?

From a carbon footprint standpoint, it's difficult to asses the impact that Muroexe has, and what they do to remediate it. Muroexe does not currently provide data as to their environmental impact or remediation efforts, so it's difficult to accurately asses them in these areas. They have informed us however, that they are currently in negotiations to offset their carbon footprint through various organizations and companies that are responsible for reforesting forests.

Does Muroexe use green shipping methods?

It's unclear from their website if Muroexe uses net-zero or negative emissions shipping partners, either domestically or internationally. We’ve asked them for clarification, and are currently awaiting reply.

Does Muroexe use eco-friendly packaging?

Muroexe has informed us that all of their boxes are recycled and recyclable.

How should I dispose of my worn out Muroexe shoes?

We’ve asked the Muroexe team if they currently have, or are developing, a shoe recycling program, and are awaiting reply. In the meantime, Get it Vegan recommends either trying to have them repaired, donating them to someone in need, or taking them to a clothing recycling depot (if available in your city), which can strip them down to their recyclable components.

Are Muroexe shoes recyclable?

Per the Muroexe website, "We sell in more than 320 shops all around the globe. We deliver all over Europe and to the main countries worldwide as: USA, Canada, Costa Rica, Mexico, Australia, Japan, Singapore and China."

Do Muroexe shoes ever go on sale?

Yes - there’s a “Sale” section of their website, and we noticed sales in the area of 30-60% when we visited. Muroexe will also email you a 10% discount code if you subscribe to their newsletter when visiting their website.

Where are Muroexe shoes made?

According to the brand, "Our products used to be manufactured abroad, in China. Now we have opted for national production:
All the new summer collection and all the upcoming ones are made in Alicante, Spain, in our new factory. In this way we can have total and absolute control over the quality of the footwear and the incidences."

Are Muroexe shoes ethically made?

Yes! Muroexe shoes are now made in Alicante, Spain, which means their labourers are protected by the stringent labour laws of the European Union, which also include strong health and safety regulations.

Does Muroexe promote ‘slow fashion’ or a ‘circular economy’?

Muroexe appears to incorporate some elements of a circular economy, such as: employing fair labour; making their shoes close to their headquarters (which cuts down on shipping); and using recycled/recyclable packaging. They are also working towards becoming carbon neutral or negative, are soon to be releasing a line made from recycled materials that are also recyclable, and are setting up drop-off spots for old pairs at their physical stores once they reopen (closed due to pandemic).

We’ve asked the Muroexe team about any charitable initiatives they're involved with (if any), and they told us that during the pandemic, they donated pairs of Muroexe shoes to doctors and nurses.
