Is Slowers an ethically vegan brand?

Slowers is an intentionally and ethically vegan brand, rather than one that uses vegan materials out of convenience, or for other reasons. According to the brand, "The love and respect we feel for animals had to be reflected in our way of making shoes."

What materials are used to make their shoes?

All of their cotton textiles are made with GOTS-certified TEXT organic cotton. They also use other natural materials, such as linen, hemp, jute, and cork. Their soles are made with jute, cork, natural rubber and "ECO rubber" (recycled tires). According to Slowers, "We've created the first alpargata made with ecological cotton in Spain."

Are Slowers shoes eco-friendly/sustainable?

While it's difficult to quantify just how sustainable a shoe truly is, Slowers shoes are considered quite environmentally-friendly, as they incorporate so many natural and organic materials, which biodegrade more easily and harmlessly than their animal-based and synthetic counterparts, and generally involve less water use and chemical use than animal-based leathers.

Does production of Slowers shoes create a lot of CO2 emissions?

From a carbon footprint standpoint, it's difficult to asses the impact that Slowers has, and what they do to remediate it. Slowers does not currently provide data as to their environmental impact or remediation efforts, so it's difficult to accurately asses them in these areas. One thing we can say though with regards to this, is that their production takes place close to where the company is based, which generally means the brand would at least save on some emissions creation when transporting their shoes from their production facility.

It's unclear from their website if Slowers uses net-zero or negative emissions shipping partners, either domestically or internationally. We’ve asked them for clarification, and are currently awaiting reply.

We've reached out to their team to get further details on this, and they've informed us that their packaging is "The minimum possible, just the cartoon box of the shoes with kraft type. We don't use any kind of plastic in our packaging."

Are Slowers shoes recyclable or compostable?

We've reached out to their team to get further details on this, and they told us that, "We're increasing our I+D work to create biodegradable and recycled shoes. One of our dreams is to offer reverse logistics, when we're a bigger company."

How should I dispose of my old Slowers shoes?

We’ve asked the Slowers team if they currently have, or are developing, a shoe recycling program, and are awaiting reply. In the meantime, Get it Vegan recommends either trying to have them repaired, donating them to someone in need, or taking them to a clothing recycling depot (if available in your city), which can strip them down to their recyclable components.

We've asked them if they have plans to work with retailers, and they've informed us that for now their shoes are only available from their website, but that they're preparing for selling in some multi-brand stores in Spain and improving their Faire and Zalando (wholesale) accounts.
