Are Call it Spring shoes waterproof?
Some models are, although most are not. Within the shoe's description on their website, Call it Spring will provide details as to whether or not that model is waterproof. What materials are used to make their shoes?
Spring doesn't provide much information with regard to the specific composition of their shoes. They do say that their vegan leather is an 'Eco-vegan' leather, made with waterborne polyurethane (PU - a material that, according to the brand, uses less energy to create than standard vegan leathers and swaps chemical solvents for H2O). Call it Spring also says that the upper part of their shoes are either made with 30% recycled materials, or 100% from water-based PU. They also say that their B.E.D Foam™ comfort technology insoles are made from 30% recycled mattresses. Are Call it Spring shoes eco-friendly/sustainable?
From an environmentally-friendly materials standpoint, Call it Spring's shoes, boots, & sandals are at least somewhat eco-friendly (although not in any notable way), as they do incorporate some recycled materials into their designs, and their PU is water-based rather than chemical-based (although this doesn't change the fact that they use virgin man-made synthetics in most models, which is not ideal). However, those synthetics are still considered to be more environmentally friendly than animal-derived leathers (due to the inclusion of various toxic chemicals used in the tanning process, among other reasons). This is backed up by data from inside the fashion industry as well as outside of it. For the data, please see Collective Fashion Justice’s CIRCUMFAUNA initiative. The brand loses major points in the sustainability department for leaning more towards fast-fashion, and encouraging seasonal, trend-based consumption, which results in piles and piles of shoes going into landfills each year.Does production of their shoes create a lot of CO2 emissions?
From a carbon footprint standpoint, it's difficult to asses the impact that Call it Spring has, and what they do to remediate it. The company does not currently provide data as to their environmental impact or remediation efforts, so it's difficult to accurately asses them in these areas. It's worth noting that until 2022, they did measure these impacts but they, "Came to the realization that the reliability of the data sourced to measure those eco-facts isn’t up to our standards anymore."Does Call it Spring use ‘green’ shipping methods?
It's unclear from their website if they use net-zero or negative emissions shipping partners, either domestically or internationally. We’ve asked them for clarification, and are currently awaiting reply.Does Call it Spring use eco-friendly packaging?
Yes - according to Call it Spring, "We’re also committed to sustainable packaging by sourcing deforestation-free shoeboxes that have been certified by the FSC, as well as using vegetable-based inks on our packaging. Additionally, we also work with our sourcing partners to reduce any unnecessary packaging (ex. shoebox stuffing materials).”Are their shoes recyclable?
We've reached out to the Call it Spring team to get further details on whether or not any of their shoes, boots, or sandals are recyclable, and are awaiting reply. How should I dispose of my old Call it Spring shoes?
We’ve asked their team if they currently have, or are developing, a shoe recycling program, and are awaiting reply. In the meantime, Get it Vegan recommends either trying to have them repaired, donating them to someone in need, or taking them to a clothing recycling depot (if available in your city), which can strip them down to their recyclable components. What stores can I buy their shoes from?
Call it Spring shoes can be purchased from their website. The brand has 27 country-specific websites from which they sell, and deliver, locally. Their shoes can also be found in shopping malls and stores worldwide. For example, in Canada, Call it Spring has a store in most major malls. In the United States, their shoes can be found in such major retailers as Designer Shoe Warehouse (DSW) and Macy’s . You can also buy Call it Spring shoes from their Amazon store.Do Call it Spring shoes ever go on sale?
Yes - there’s a “Sale” section of their website, and we noticed sales in the area of up to 70% when we visited. Since they are a fast-fashion style brand, they often have sales at the end of a season.Where are their shoes made?
We couldn’t find any information on the Call it Spring website with regard to where their shoes are made. We’ve reached out to their team for details, and are awaiting reply. Are their shoes made with fair labour?
On their website, Call it Spring does not make mention of where their shoes are made - as such, it's difficult for us as an outside, non-certifying 3rd party to verify whether or not they ensure their factory enforces all international and local labour laws, regulations and fair working standards to provide a safe and fair working environment for their workers. We've reached out to them for clarification, and are awaiting reply. The brand's parent company (ALDO Group) does claim however, to conduct several announced and un-announced audits per year to their factories. You can read more about their 'ethical sourcing' policies here.Does Call it Spring promote ‘slow fashion’ or a ‘circular economy’?
In our view, a circular economy is not something on Call it Spring's agenda. Despite their claims to “sustainability,” it's obvious that Call it Spring is likely the exact opposite of a circular economy/slow fashion company. For example: they mass-produce goods; they produce seasonal goods; they use mostly synthetic materials; they are not very transparent about the materials they use; they overproduce, which results in loads of new shoes being sent to the landfill; and they offer their footwear for low prices (which means someone who isn't the consumer is 'paying for it,' so to speak). Basically, their business model is in direct conflict with the slow fashion movement, as it promotes the mass and constant consumption of lower-cost goods. Is Call it Spring a charitable company
Call it Spring occasionally promotes charitable causes. For example, on the Canadian Call it Spring website they were promoting a Black History Month Initiative when we last visited, an initiative that involves them donating 100% of the sales from their Nurture Crew Neck to Afri-Can FoodBasket in support of Food Justice and Food Sovereignty for Toronto’s African, Caribbean, Black (ACB) community.Related Brands
