Bohempia wants to bring hemp into the mainstream. And why not? The material is natural, vegan, carbon negative, soft, breathable, anti-bacterial, and moisture wicking. What are Bohempia shoes made of?

Most Bohempia shoes are made with a 100% hemp upper fabric with cotton laces and natural rubber soles. Some of their models, such as their winter shoes, are made from Ultrasuede® vegan microfiber suede from Japanese company TORAY. It is made from recycled polyester, i.e. recycled PET bottles, and can be further recycled. It is one of the most environmentally friendly suede/leather substitutes.

Why make shoes out of hemp?

Bohempia makes their shoes out of hemp primarily because it's a very ecologically friendly material. Apart from that, hemp fabric is antimicrobial, hypoallergenic, moisture-wicking, naturally thermoregulating and quite strong. It's also animal friendly!

Does Bohempia use sustainable packaging or shipping methods?

It's not clear from their public-facing marketing materials what their packaging materials are currently made of, or if they use a low emissions or emissions-offsetting courier, either domestically or internationally. We've reached out for clarification and are currently awaiting reply.

Are Bohempia shoes sustainably made?

Using hemp as a primary material has several ecological advantages versus other natural materials, let alone synthetic ones. For example, hemp only needs 50% of the water that cotton does to grow, it's less demanding on the soil, and consumes 95% less agrochemicals that cotton, while removing 1.62 tons of carbon from the air for every ton harvested. Bohempia also uses natural rubber for their soles. One knock against their sustainability however, is that they don't utilize a "made-to-order" production model, so there is a fair chance of overproduction. We've asked for additional details regarding their level of sustainability, and are currently awaiting a reply.

Where is Bohempia's factory?

Bohempia's clothing and accessories are made in the Czech Republic, and their shoes are made in Romania.

Are Bohempia shoes and accessories made with fair labour?

Big time! Being that their factories are in the European Union, Bohempia's workers are protected by the stringent labour laws and health and safety regulations of the United Nations.

Where can I buy Bohempia shoes?

Bohempia is currently an online-only retailer, aside from their shop in Prague, Czech Republic. We've contacted them to find out if they have any plans to expand into retail locations, and are currently awaiting reply.
