What materials are used to make Enda runners?

Other than stating that some of their shoes have "engineered uppers" and "high-rebound EVA under the forefoot," there isn't much information available with regard to what materials Enda uses to make its shoes. We have reached out to their team, and are currently awaiting reply.

Are Enda shoes eco-friendly/sustainable?

From an environmentally-friendly materials standpoint, it's difficult to determine how sustainable their shoes are, given that we know little about what materials are used to make them. However, in terms of their carbon footprint, Enda makes a great effort to be environmentally-friendly. Working with Climate Neutral, Enda measures its total carbon footprint (It's important to note that in Kenya - where their shoes are made - the electric grid is mostly renewable), and is a Climate Neutral Certified company; the first in Africa, and the first road running shoes to achieve that certification. Their B Corp Certification profile also reveals that they score a combnied 11.9 for their sustainability efforts, with their best scores coming from the "Land, Office, Plants" and "Inputs" categories, while scoring a 0 in the "Outputs" category.

Does Enda use green shipping methods?

As part of their commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emmissions, Enda has replaced air freight for non-local fulfillments with ocean freight, and has pledged to completely cease air freight of raw materials. You can find out more about what have done, and will do this year, to fight climate change on their Climate Neutral profile.

Does Enda use eco-friendly packaging?

Enda claims to only use reused or reusable material in their packaging.

Are Enda shoes recyclable or compostable?

It’s unclear from the information available on their website if Enda’s shoes are recyclable or compostable. We have asked for clarification from their team, and are currently awaiting reply.

How should I dispose of my worn out Enda shoes?

We have asked the Enda team if they currently have, or are developing, a shoe recycling program, and are awaiting reply. In the meantime, we recommend either trying to have them repaired, donating them to someone in need, or taking them to a clothing recycling depot (if available in your city), which can strip them down to their recyclable components.

Where can I buy Enda shoes?

For the time being it looks like Enda shoes can only be purchased from their website, or from their social channels. We've asked them if they have plans to work with retailers, and are currently awaiting reply.

Do Enda shoes ever go on sale?

While we haven't noticed any sales as of yet, Enda does offer $10 off your first pair when registering for their newsletter.

Are Enda shoes ethically made?

One of Enda's missions is to "deliver economic empowerment to Kenyans through production, and by giving back to the community." In keeping with that, they have at least some level of employment standards and ethics built into their operations, as they are a B Corp Certified company. Earning this distinction involves undergoing a rigorous process of data-gathering and auditing related to the social, environmental and economic good it does as a company (in the "workers" section, they currently score a 16.4 out of a possible 35, with their highest marks coming from the "wages" and "benefits" categories, and their lowest scores coming from the "Human Rights & Labor Policy" and "Occupational Health & Safety" categories).

Does Enda promote ‘slow fashion’ or a ‘circular economy’?

Enda appears to employ some elements of a circular economy, such as achieving carbon neutrality, using eco-friendly packaging materials, paying good wages, and by making an effort to cut down on production waste.

Is Enda a charitable company?

Yes! Enda claims that a portion of the purchase price of each pair of shoes goes towards social good initiatives in Kenya, that they call the "Enda Community Foundation", wherein they "work with a panel of experts to find projects where we can have the most impact for people who could use the most help. In the spirit of Harambee, we then engage with our global community of Enda runners to decide which projects to support."

Enda Product Range

Enda currently makes women's and men's running shoes and training shoes: The Lapatet, which is a daily running shoe designed for" the bulk of your weekly milage," with "ample cushioning and a sock-like upper," and the Iten, with an engineered mesh upper, is "a perfect workout shoe perfect for speed work days and cross-training." Both are available in a wide variety of sizes and colours.
