GURU Mtp Brand Highlights

GURU mtp is a brand that talks the talk (they have a blog, "The Preach," that educates on environmental issues in fashion), AND walks the walk (they're highly transparent about their production processes, and even their profit margins - something we have yet to see from other shoe brands). They do a great job of not only communicating their values, but keeping to them: product quality, responsible production, fair labour, environmental respect (while being aware that perfection isn't possible) and animal welfare.

About GURU mtp

"We recommend that you use the French BISOU method (bisou means kiss!): Besoin: Need, Immédiateté: Immediacy, Semblable: Similar, Origine: Origin, Utilité: Usefulness, before buying." - GURU mtp team

Are GURU mtp shoes intentionally vegan?

GURU mtp is an intentionally vegan brand, rather than one that uses vegan materials out of convenience, or for other reasons. According to the brand, "Animals are not made to be shoes or fashion accessories, especially since more ecological alternatives exist." They're a PETA-certified vegan footwear brand, and members of the F.A.K.E. movement.

What materials are used to make GURU's shoes?

Their shoes are made primarily of vegan leather (PU) and vegan suede (both from textiles that are manufactured in Europe and are guaranteed by the OEKO-TEX 100 label and produced without CO2 emissions). They also use Piñatex for some models of their shoes. Fortunately, GURU provides a breakdown of the materials used for each shoe on that shoe's product page.

Are GURU mtp shoes eco-friendly/sustainable?

Environmental-friendliness is top-of-mind for this French brand, although they do acknowledge having to use primarily plastic-based materials due to restraints in suitable alternatives (they also use Piñatex as the material for some of their models, although even that currently contains bio-plastics as an emulsifier). GURU is also constantly seeking new materials, both to succeed in getting rid of any petroleum-based products, and to encourage the research and development of innovative and natural materials, and actively encourage website visitors to reach out if they have ideas for innovative materials they can experiment with. It's worth noting that having OEKO-TEX certification on their vegan leather and suede guarantees the absence of harmful substances for the environment, both during its manufacture and when worn.

Does GURU use green shipping methods?

It's unclear from their website if GURU uses net-zero or negative emissions shipping partners, either domestically or internationally. We’ve asked them for clarification, and are currently awaiting reply.

Does GURU use eco-friendly packaging?

We've asked the GURU team for details regarding the materials they use for packaging, and they've informed us that all of their packaging is "chosen with the utmost care," and that the cardboard is 70% recycled and 100% recyclable; the wrapping paper is 100% recycled and 100% recyclable; and their adhesive tapes are 100% recyclable paper, and they can be recycled along with the packaging. In order to avoid additional waste, they offer an economic packaging shipment (the shoe box will be carefully packed in a wrapping paper).

Are GURU shoes recyclable or compostable?

It’s unclear from the information available on their website if GURU’s shoes are recyclable or compostable. We’ve asked for clarification from the GURU team, and are currently awaiting reply.

How should I dispose of my worn out GURU shoes?

We’ve asked the GURU team if they currently have, or are developing, a shoe recycling program, and they've informed us that this is something they plan to implement once their company grows into profitability. In the meantime, Get it Vegan recommends either trying to have them repaired, donating them to someone in need, or taking them to a clothing recycling depot (if available in your city), which can strip them down to their recyclable components.

Where can I buy GURU mtp shoes?

GURU mtp shoes can be purchased from their website, from their social channels, or from 2 retail locations in France.

Do GURU mtp shoes ever go on sale?

GURU mtp doesn't agree with the seasonal sales cycles of fast fashion, specifically the over-production and waste that naturally results from it. In keeping with that, they limit their production run sizes, and we haven't noticed any sales on their website or social channels. The brand is also one that stands up to the massive over-consumption encouraged by Black Friday, and has stated, "We do not produce more in anticipation of Black Friday."

Are GURU mtp shoes ethically made?

Yes! In keeping with their brand ethos, of "just value," GURU shoes are handcrafted in the EU (Spain and Portugal), which means their labourers are protected by the stringent labour laws of the European Union, which also include strong health and safety regulations.

Does GURU promote ‘slow fashion’ or a ‘circular economy’?

GURU appears to incorporate several elements of a circular economy/slow fashion model, such as producing in small batches; speaking up against and not following seasonal sales cycles; employing fair labour; using progressively more environmentally-friendly materials; being transparent about production; and, importantly, educating the public about environmental responsibility issues in fashion by way of their blog, "The Preach".

Is GURU mtp a charitable company?

We have asked the GURU team about any charitable initiatives they're involved with (if any), and they've informed us that they plan to once they become profitable.
