Are Thaely shoes eco-friendly/sustainable?

As a brand, Thaely was built to make eco-friendly and sustainable shoes. The brand was initially created as a design exercise to develop an ethically produced sneaker that only uses components recycled from waste materials. In this, they have succeeded, which results in a very eco-friendly sneaker. One of their main materials, rPET (recycled plastic bottles), uses 59% less energy than virgin PET, while using recycled rubber (as they do in their soles) creates up to 20x fewer emissions than using virgin rubber, according to brand. The brand also pledges to measure and report their impact against five of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. For them, these include:

It's unclear from their website if Thaely uses net-zero or negative emissions shipping partners, either domestically or internationally. We’ve asked them for clarification, and are currently awaiting reply.

Yes! Their sneaker/trainer packaging is made from recycled paper, which is embedded with Basil seeds and dyed with waste coffee. They source these packages from the company Plantables in Agra, India.

How should I dispose of my old Thaely shoes?

We’ve asked their team if they currently have, or are developing, a shoe recycling program, and are awaiting reply. In the meantime, Get it Vegan recommends either trying to have them repaired, donating them to someone in need, or taking them to a clothing recycling depot (if available in your city), which can strip them down to their recyclable components.
