Indosole Vegan Recycled Tire sandals

Indosole is Likely a Fully Vegan Brand

Indosole claims that their sandals are “100% vegan.” Although they do not currently have any certification to verify it, it is likely that they’re a 100% vegan brand based on the composition of their sandals (Indosole has informed us that no parts of their sandals contain animal materials).

About Indosole

Founded in 2009 by Kyle Parsons, Indosole makes minimalist sandals from recycled tires, recycled shoes (new line), natural rubber, and some virgin materials, such as nylon. They typically sell in a mid-range price point, and are available worldwide through a large network of retailers.

What materials are used to make Indosole sandals?

According to Indosole, their sandals are "made from 40% Recycled Tire, 30% Natural Rubber and 30% New Material." On their site, it shows that their thong sandals use a nylon thong, and ENVRO (a fibre developed by Indosole) fibre straps. When we asked them if any glues they use are free of any animal components, including in the glues, they said, "Yes! Our sandals are 100% vegan.”

Are Indosole sandals eco-friendly/sustainable?

From an environmentally-friendly materials standpoint, Indosole uses mainly recycled and natural materials (as well as virgin nylon, however). From a carbon footprint standpoint, water usage, chemical usage, and general natural resource usage standpoint it's difficult to asses how much environmental impact the production of Indosole's sandals have. However, they do claim to source 95% of their materials locally, which helps cut down on the environmental toll that shipping these materials to their production facility takes.

Does Indosole use green shipping methods?

It's unclear from their website if Indosole uses net-zero or negative emissions shipping partners, either domestically or internationally. We’ve asked them for clarification, and are currently awaiting reply.

Does Indosole use eco-friendly packaging?

It's unclear from their website if Indosole uses recycled, recyclable, compostable, or other forms of eco-friendly and sustainable packaging. We’ve asked them for details regarding the materials they use for packaging, and are currently awaiting reply.

Are Indosole sandals recyclable or compostable?

It’s unclear from the information available on their website if Indosole’s sandals are recyclable or compostable. We’ve asked for clarification from the Indosole team, and are currently awaiting reply.

How should I dispose of my worn out Indosole sandals?

We’ve asked the Indosole team if they currently have, or are developing, a sandal recycling program, and are awaiting reply. In the meantime, Get it Vegan recommends either trying to have them repaired, donating them to someone in need, or taking them to a clothing recycling depot (if available in your city), which can strip them down to their recyclable components.

Where can I buy Indosole sandals?

Indosole sandals are available on their website, on Amazon, as well as from their flagship store in Indonesia, and through a large global network of retailers.

Do Indosole sandals ever go on sale?

When we visited their website there was a popup code that appeared offering 10% off for 'new customers.' Beyond that, we haven't seen any sales, seasonal or otherwise, when visiting their website or social channels.

Are Indosole sandals ethically made?

Indosole makes their sandals in Bali, Indonesia. While it's difficult for us as an outside, non-certifying 3rd party to verify whether or not Indosole ensures its factories enforce all international and local labour laws, regulations and fair working standards to provide a safe and fair working environment for their workers, they are a Certified B Corp, which provides a level of transparency as to their labour ethics. Within their B Corp profile, their highest labour section score comes in the "Compensation & Wages" category (although the scores aren't that strong), with no data being shown for occupational health and safety-related categories.

Does Indosole promote ‘slow fashion’ or a ‘circular economy’?

Indosole appears to incorporate some elements of a circular economy, such as primarily using renewable and recycled materials, and making timeless styles.

Is Indosole a charitable company?

We’ve asked the Indosole team about any charitable initiatives they're involved with (if any), and are currently awaiting reply, as there is no such information available on their website.

Indosole Product Range

Indosole makes men's, women's and children's sandals. Their design aesthetic could be considered minimalist, and most of their lineup consists of solid colours (in quite a wide variety), with the sole having a 'tire tread' look, which is apt, considering they are made of recycled tires. They currently make flip-flops, thongs, slides and cross-strap sandals.
