What materials are used to make Linus sandals?

According to the brand, Linus sandals are made of "expanded ecological PVC, a 100% recyclable, vegan material, free from heavy metals and with 70% renewable sources in its composition."

Are the materials used to make Linus sandals eco-friendly/sustainable?

From an environmentally-friendly materials standpoint, Linus sandals could be considered at least somewhat eco-friendly, as they are recyclable, and they incorporate 70% non-petroleum-based plastic materials into their designs (with 30% being petroleum-based plastic). Or if not eco-friendly, then at least less detrimental to the environment than if they were made entirely from petroleum-based plastic. It's also worth noting, that according to the brand, they are made "completely free of heavy metals and phthalates, using plasticizers of totally plant origin," and that through their partnership with eureciclo, they claim to compensate 200% of the plastic they produce.

Does production of Linus sandals create a lot of CO2 emissions?

Linus has partnered with Carbonext to measure the CO2 impact of their production, who has it defined as 0.364kg of CO2e per pair, and has certified them as carbon negative, due to the purchase of carbon credits from the Envira project. The brand claims that this initiative has let them offset twice the carbon emissions produced from their activities as a company.

Does Linus use green shipping methods?

Linus has informed us that they do not work with a net-zero emissions delivery company, but that they do offset 100% of shipping emissions (and all of their emissions as a company) with Carbonext.

Does Linus use eco-friendly packaging?

Linus claims that everything they use to pack and ship their sandals is free from plastic (aside from the sandals inside, of course). They also state that "the tag that comes with each pair is made of seed paper... you can plant your own and grow daisies!" And that they've "swapped regular sticky tape for paper tape and don't send you any unnecessary flyers - all the information you need to know is printed on the box and on the label."

Are Linus sandals recyclable or compostable?

Linus shoes may not be compostable, but they are recyclable! According to the brand, their sandals are "100% recyclable." Whether or not 100% of the pairs get recycled is of course, another matter, and something for which we do not have data.

How should I dispose of my worn out Linus sandals?

According to the brand, "As Linus is made from a single material, it is 100% recyclable and can be disposed of in plastic waste." They advise that you take your worn out Linus sandals to recycling points within the city of São Paulo. Also, the brand advises that if you are located in Pinheiros and want to take a walk to Casa Linus, they have a collection point for Linus recycling there. Their goal for the near future, is to have collection points spread throughout Brazil to facilitate this recycling.

Are Linus sandals ethically made?

Linus sandals are made in Brazil, so their worker's are protected by the labour laws of Brazil, which include 8 hour work days, or 44 hour work weeks (similar to Alberta, Canada). However, being that their sandals are made in Brazil, it's difficult for us as an outside, non-certifying 3rd party to verify whether or not Linus ensures its factory enforces all international and local labour laws, regulations and fair working standards to provide a safe and fair working environment for their workers.

Does Linus promote ‘slow fashion’ or a ‘circular economy’?

Linus appears to incorporate several elements of a circular economy, such as: using materials that are 100% recyclable; using plant-based plasticizers; making timeless styles; avoiding discount-level pricing; using paper tape instead of plastic tape for shipping; off-setting their plastic production; having a recycling partner; using carbon negative company processes; and producing and selling their sandals locally. One area in which Linus can improve, is to produce their sandals without using any petroleum-based plastic.

Is Linus a charitable company?

We’ve asked the Linus team about any charitable initiatives they're involved with (if any), and they've informed us that "Yes; one of our sandals, Linus Amazônia, has 100% of its profits donated to Operação Amazônia Nativa, Brazil's first indigenous organization."
