About Hexa
Founded by Sy Mahatthanarak, Hexa's mission is to make fashion that's both kind and sustainable. They acknowledge the sustainability shortcomings of the vegan leather currently available on the market, and have stated that they're investigating ways to reduce the impact of the materials they use for their footwear, their shipping, as well as the impacts of the methods used to manufacture their footwear.
Are Hexa shoes intentionally vegan?
Hexa is an intentionally vegan brand, rather than one that uses vegan materials out of convenience, or for other reasons. In their own words, "We are proud to be a PETA-Approved Vegan company."What materials are used to make Hexa shoes?
Currently, Hexa uses a mix of low toxic microfiber, jute, Lycra, recycled canvas, recycled foam, recycled rubber to make their shoes. Each product description on their site lists a general breakdown of the materials used to make it. According to the brand, they are investigating offset strategies so they can achieve a neutral to positive carbon impact with every item produced. They also claim that they are always on the lookout for new innovations in sustainable materials and manufacturing methods that they can apply to their supply chain to reduce their environmental footprint. Are Hexa shoes eco-friendly/sustainable?
Although most of their primary materials are synthetic, Hexa does incorporate natural materials, such as jute and cotton (although they are not advertised to be certified organic natural materials, which are worse for the environment than their natural counterparts), as well as some recycled materials, such as rubber and eva, into their designs. A more detailed look at the materials they use can be found on their "Our Materials" page, which also includes the ability to trace the supply chain of their Japanese vegan leather.Does Hexa use green shipping methods?
It's unclear from their website if Hexa uses net-zero or negative emissions shipping partners, either domestically or internationally. We’ve asked them for clarification, and they told us that for international delivery, they work with DHL, which is committed to Zero emission by 2050. For local delivery, Hexa has informed us that there's currently no company in Thailand that has stated their mission with regard to green delivery commitment yet, but according to the brand, "when we hear of it, we will be sure to work with them."Does Hexa use eco-friendly packaging?
On their website, Hexa claims that they are "constantly reassessing (the environmentally-friendliness) of everything from packaging to logistics, not just manufacturing." We've reached out to Hexa for details on this, and they told us they pack their shoes in reusable dust bags, and that they use recycled postal boxes for delivery. Are Hexa shoes recyclable or compostable?
It’s unclear from the information available on their website if Hexa’s shoes are recyclable or compostable. We’ve asked for clarification from the Hexa team, and they did mentioned that their shoes can be repaired (depending on their condition), but didn't mention whether or not they are recyclable or compostable. How should I dispose of my worn out Hexa shoes?
We’ve asked the Hexa team if they currently have, or are developing, an end-of-life plan for their shoes, and they told us that as part of their customer service program, their customers can reach out to them to get their shoes fixed (depending on the condition of their shoes), free of charge. They also told us that as of yet, they don't believe Thailand has a shoe recycling facility. Get it Vegan recommends either trying to have them repaired, donating them to someone in need, or taking them to a local shoe or clothing recycling depot (if available in your city), which can strip them down to their recyclable components (if applicable).Where can I buy Hexa shoes?
Hexa shoes can be purchased from their website, from their social channels, as well as from a few retail partners in Thailand (which is where they are based, and where their shoes are made).Do Hexa shoes ever go on sale?
Yes! When we visited their website ,we noticed most of their items were marked down, some up to 70% off.Are Hexa shoes ethically made?
Being that Hexa's shoes are made in Thailand, it's difficult for us as an outside, non-certifying 3rd party to verify as to whether or not Hexa ensures its factory enforces all international and local labour laws, regulations and fair working standards to provide a safe and fair working environment for their workers. According to the brand however, "As part of a Fashion Revolution movement, we work with Thailand’s local factory in compliance with ISO 9001:2015. There are over 50 men and women who are happy making HEXA Shoes in a good work condition and get paid fairly."Does Hexa promote ‘slow fashion’ or a ‘circular economy’?
Hexa appears to incorporate some elements of a circular economy, such as using increasingly sustainable and high-quality materials, aiming for carbon neutral manufacturing, claiming to employ fair labour, offering to repair customers' Hexa shoes, and incorporating natural and recycled materials. One area in which they could potentially improve is by using certified organic cotton in place of their current cotton. Is Hexa a charitable company?
We asked the Hexa team about any charitable initiatives they're involved with (if any), and they told us that as a company, they do a yearly donation to local animal sanctuaries, including The Voice Foundation and Save Elephants Foundation in Thailand.Related Brands
