What materials are used to make Love Our Planet's shoes?

Love Our Planet uses a combination of natural, recycled and virgin synthetic materials to make their shoes and sandals, such as: recycled polyester yarn made with collected plastic waste; recycled cotton yarn from used cotton clothing; recycled PU foam (the footbed of their sneakers is 85% recycled PU foam); recycled TPU (Thermoplastic polyurethane); TPR (thermoplastic rubber) makes up at least 60% of the composition of their soles; FSC certificated cork (for the socks and wedge coverings); and "Eco-PU" (claimed as "eco-friendly" because they are made using materials that are free from organic solvents and heavy metals). On their website, Love Our Planet will give a specific breakdown of the materials used to make each shoe, within that product's description. It's also worth noting that all of their recycled materials are certified by a Transaction Certificate issued by The Recycled Claim Standard (RCS).

Are the materials used to make Love Our Planet shoes eco-friendly/sustainable?

From an environmentally-friendly materials standpoint, Love Our Planet shoes are at least somewhat eco-friendly, as they do incorporate many natural and recycled materials into their designs. Recycled materials are quite eco-friendly, as they represent a significant reduction in water consumption, CO2 emissions and other environmental impacts from virgin materials production. Love Our Planet does not currently use any tools or programs that can quantify and share the eco-friendliness of their products, other than sharing an overview of the materials used in each shoe. And while virgin man-made synthetics are generally considered worse for the environment than recycled synthetics, or natural materials, they are generally considered to be more environmentally friendly than animal-derived leathers. Given that their shoes are made in these countries, it's difficult for us as an outside, non-certifying 3rd party to verify whether or not Love Our Planet ensures its factories enforce all international and local labour laws, regulations and fair working standards to provide a safe and fair working environment for their workers. It's worth noting however, that they claim their factories are BSCI certified (Business Social Compliance Initiative), which, according to the brand, "comply with recognized international parameters." However, the only information available online about the BSCI indicates that it is not a certification program, and merely a set of guiding principles.
